Hi friends! Ever heard of the company Chairish? They are an online store that sells vintage furniture, decor, jewelry and other accessories. I came across their website a while back and found myself sucked into the virtual vortex of beautiful objects. So when they contacted me about participating in their "Style Challenge" I was absolutely up for the game!

I love mixing furnishings of different styles and time periods. And Chairish is the perfect source to create an eclectic curated look. I put together a style board for a Cool Eclectic Blue Bedroom. All the items I've selected are from the Chairish website except the Anthropology bedding, and West Elm curtains. The key to combining all the beautiful unique pieces you might find at Chairish is balance...

This design was inspired by the beautiful blue Persian Overdyed Rug. I just love the texture and intensity of it, while still feeling tranquil and calm. To tone down and balance the intensity, I brought in some more traditional pieces in lighter colors, like the Corbeille Cane Bed and the Faux Bamboo Campaign Chest. Next I mixed in a more contemporary mid-century modern Adrian Pearshall Rocking Chaise Lounge. To balance that out, the Danish Teak Nightstands which would be located across the room are also a mid-century style and have similar wood tone to the rocker's legs. then I found a Spanish Revival Gothic Double Pendant that I absolutely love and had to use. Something about a draping chain pendant gets me every time. Even though it is a completely different style from anything else, by balancing it with other gold items, like the Gilt Wood Mirror, it doesn't seem out of place. The curve of the top of the mirror even echos the line of the headboard! The remaining accessories carry the colors of the rug throughout the design.

So remember balance and don't be afraid to mix that awesome mid-century chair you found with an ornate table!

Today I wanted to share with you a project we've been working on at my office. This awesome mid-century house is currently under construction. It's getting a brand new open kitchen, a reinvented master bath, and glistening new tile in beachy shades of aqua and white in every bathroom. Here are some of the samples we were considering as it all came together...

The tile, stone slabs, and wood flooring are almost completely installed, so hopefully I'll get to share finished photos with you soon. But for now, here are some of the drawings I did as well as some photos of the project underway.

Long time no see blogland. Lets just jump right back in the water here...

I've been busily working away at a local residential design firm and just a few weeks ago we made a trip to Las Vegas for a plethora of industry events: the Las Vegas Market #LVMKT, the Kitchen and Bath Industry Show (KBIS), the NAHB International Builders Show (IBS), and the International Surfaces Event (TISE). Between all of those events and the rich interiors of Vegas hotels, I've been saturated like a sponge with design ideas and inspiration. So I thought I'd share a little sprinkle of what I saw with ya'll!

Saw some cool buggie art...
Last semester I took Healthcare Design. The project for this class was to design a medical clinic in Columbus, Indiana for one of three cultural communities: Iraqi, Vietnamese, or Latino. My partner and I were assigned the Latino community and after researching the location and population, we decided to incorporate some mid-century design aesthetics inspired by Columbus, Indiana's Miller House, with much more vibrant and colorful design features that would appeal to the Latino community. Simply named, LatinoMed, incorporates linear skylights similar to those in the Miller House, designed by famous mid century designer Eero Saarinen. And white walls create a neutral backdrop for an interesting mix of patterned textiles inspired by those used in the Miller House as well as an uplifting imagery of Latino families, and iconic Latino artwork to help the target community feel welcome and comfortable.
A theme through out our design was the tree of life commonly featured in Mexican and Latino folk art. We repeated this symbol in the Chapel wall's stained glass windows, on a wall mural in the children's play area, and on a fountain as you enter the exam room area, as well as in unique suspended radial wood ceiling systems that resemble a canopy of trees.
Moving back into the exam room area, we again utilized the tree of life theme to create a wayfinding feature along the floor where branch like paths guide the patients to exam rooms. Nursing stations incorporate interesting reclaimed wood succulent planter boxes for interest and chairs are upholstered in a green material to promote ideas of growth, health, and a sense of calm.
Overall I think we developed a very sucessful design that is warm and inviting for the Latino Community, but still clean and modern and Miller House-inspired.
What do you think?Genevieve Chamblisshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02817596489371697515noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-327169827925679825.post-26207434754247187662014-04-07T09:00:00.000-07:002014-04-07T09:00:00.390-07:00Back! and time for an UpdateHi blogland! Have you missed me? I've missed you. Life has been in full swing and blogging had to take a backseat for a bit. But I'm back! and have design projects to share and hopefully some DIY projects coming up. And I do enjoy indulging in and contributing to the inspiration I get from blogland and all over really. So lets get back into it!

First, I wanna share a little life update. Here's what's been going on in my life since I've been absent:

My now ex-boyfriend moved out on December 1st. I still love him dearly and we are still friends, but we're at different places in our lives.

I gained a new awesome roommate! A strong, powerful and fun woman who just went through a double mastectomy and is kicking butt in recovery from it!

We got a second kitty, Scully, for my roommate. Between trying to assert their dominance and position as head cat of the household, Duchess and him on are cordial and sometimes even act like they like one another!

I got a second job as an interior design assistant. I haven't had the opportunity to work for this other firm a whole lot yet because of both their busy schedule as well as my jam packed school schedule, but we'll see how it goes.

Took two studio classes this past semester, which was TONS of work. In Healthcare Design class me and a partner designed a medical clinic for the Latino community in Columbus, Indiana. And in Commercial 2, I designed the first two floors of a hotel in Singapore called S Factor, which was chosen for the Hall of Fame. (More about those projects soon!)

I've recently been working more for the designer I've been working with for the past 6 months which is great! The firm is Dwellings Design Group. We only have one project up on Houzz right now, but lots of idea books.

I'm taking a break from school next semester because the last class that I need for the Associate's Degree isn't offered. That will give me time to determine whether I'm going to fork out more money for the Bachelors Degree, or if its not necessary given my previous degree and portfolio. It also will give me more time for blogging! Yay!

So those are the big things. The switch from engineering to interior design has been great, but its still in the works. I've got to update my portfolio again, talk to more design firms, and hustle up some work. So I'll keep ya'll filled and share my school projects with you as well.

I don't know how others have felt going through a transition like this, but for me, its exciting, empowering, and absolutely terrifying all at the same time...

I want to share my real feelings about it all in the hopes that someone else who's terrified to follow their dreams might feel like they can despite the fear... and to remind myself of that fact as well! Hopefully I'll look back on this post one day when I'm all settled into a career and and be able to proudly say, "I made it!"

Why is this on my mind right now, you ask? Last week, I finally gave notice at my engineering job to pursue design full time. I have one more week, only ONE MORE WEEK! Yay! That's just thrilling. From then on I will no longer be "part-time engineering/part-time design assistant," I'll just be an interior designer! Technically, a freelance interior design assistant, but I have some prospects on the horizon, so there's a possibility that I'll have some work of my own.

This is all such great news! And sometimes I think... "I can do this! I'm going to be awesome!" and then I start thinking of all the little things I'll have to do to get a professional business up and running, and my lack of experience in real-life design, and the fact that I've just started school again which is also a lot of work and, and, and... and I totally get down on myself and feel incompetent. I'm guessing I'm not the only one with feelings like this. So I'm giving myself positive reminders to keep me going. Here's a great one my mom told me about recently...

My mom saw Sara Blakely, inventor of Spanx, speak a while back and told me that she largely attributed her success to a philosophy of failure that her father instilled in her at a young age. She said her father would often ask her each what she failed at that day, which changed her perspective to view failure as a positive thing because that meant you'd tried.

I'm usually so afraid of failure so this is a new and amazing concept for me. What a great thing to keep in mind when trying something new. So if I fail, I'll buy myself an ice cream cone, pat myself of the back and say "good for trying, Genevieve! No get up and try again, so we can have more celebratory ice cream!"

I certainly did. And now its back to work! I'm still on the job hunt and as you know, still in school. So with my most recent residential design project complete, I've added a few more pages to my ever-evolving portfolio. Using the same format that I showed you before, I dismantled the boards I put together for school and re-created them on these lovely (11x17) pages...
Merry Christmas everyone! I hope you all are having a warm and cozy day with family and/or friends! I'm up at my dad's but wanted to share some photos are my apartment. I didn't put a whole lot of effort into decorating this year, but I did put up some things to get in the Christmas spirit. Sorry for sharing this with you so late.
Unfortunately there weren't a whole lot of places to put candles in the middle of the tree so there's a big gap with no light, but it was lovely none-the-less. Here are some photos...
The last class of the semester was last Thursday so I'm a free woman now! I absolutely love school, but after obsessing over a project for 12 weeks, I'm exhausted and ready for a break. Hopefully I'll learn to better balance things when I'm actually working in the field. :/ We'll see.

I spent a week or so before finding the final pillow and drapery trims, working on renderings of each spaces, putting together digital boards, and mounting fabric samples. Last Thursday we had to do our final presentation of our projects, which went really well. We had a really talented class and it was so interesting to see everyone's final product.

Here are some photos of my labor of love...

With adjacency matrices and bubble diagrams I nailed down the floor plan; then refined the furniture in the space plan and tweaked other architectural details, sketching along the way to get a better idea of how the space would feel.

A few weeks ago we had to pull together our work thus far on two "process boards." Not only did these boards show the, you guessed it, process of how the design has come about, but they also give an idea of where we are headed with the design. It was just fascinating to see all the different designs coming about from modern and mid-century to colorful transitional and art-deco-inspired to traditional (like mine). There are so many talented students in my class! It's really a pleasure learning from them as well as the teachers.

Anyway... here's how mine turned out...

My fictional clients are music mogul and successful business owner Jack Sanborne (the lead character in the movie Something's Gotta Give), his wife Karen, a food writer (the character in the play "Dinner with Friends," their 16-year old daughter Taylor (Swift), and Malcolm the dog. In order to meet the families needs and desires, I've chosen to go for a classic, refined, and elegant traditional look. Articulated architectural details like wall paneling, archways and parquet floors will set the stage for a collection of french antiques and newer furniture pieces as well as art and accessories from the family's travels.

As you enter, I've created a formal foyer and living room with 20 foot ceilings to add an impressive sense of luxury, since Karen likes to keep up appearances, but an inviting color palette of mostly creams, pale blue, and green will keep the space feeling comfortable and understated. The living room flows nicely into the dining room, where I plan on doing a lovely muted scenic wallpaper with a pop of red on dining room chairs, which will coordinate with art and some pillows in the living room, to liven up the home. This space will also be great for the dinner parties the family will host with direct access from the dining to kitchen for ease of use.

Jack was given an office down stairs because he does work from home often. The space will also serve as his "man-cave" with his own TV and masculine stained wood walls, and color palette of brown and deeper blue, his favorite color. I've also included a murphy-bed in the office to accommodate any overnight guests they might have and provided a shower in the powder bath downstairs for those guests.

As you move to the back of the first floor you enter a more casual space with informal family room adjacent to the open kitchen where the family can relax and watch TV, Karen can cook or do some writing on her laptop in the cozy breakfast nook, and Malcolm can hang out on his dog bed. And that space opens up to a highly functional patio with a lovely fountain, comfortable seating, a bbq and table for dining outdoors on a lovely summer night.

Next you have the second floor...

The colors upstairs will be an edited version of the palette downstairs with only the soothing light blues and greens and warm wood furniture and floors for a very relaxing environment.

The stairs come up to a landing with a peek-a-boo opening to the living room below and an ample storage closet. To the left there is a laundry room and to the right, Taylor's room with canopy bed, chaise lounge and a desk for her to do her school work. She has her own bath and walk-in closet and a lovely view out the floor-to-ceiling windows. Straight ahead, through the grand double doors is the luxurious master bedroom with TV above a fireplace and a cozy seating area with ottoman. The chairs will be on casters so that Karen can flip around and use the tucked-away desk to do her writing. I've also given them a large his and hers closet, and lovely master bath with floating mirrors above the sinks, a freestanding tub, bidet and toilet in a private room, and a vanity area for Karen.

Now I'm well on my way to picking materials, furnishings and accessories. We have to fully design three rooms in the home for our presentation boards so I'm doing the living room, dining room, and master bedroom. But of course, I cant help wanting to do it all and have already picked out fabric for the other rooms as well. But I'll share that with you next time.

Hope everyone had a happy and fun Halloween! I spent mine in class in my yellow crayon costume. Fun times! Anyway... I had to present my process boards for my Residential Project and thought I'd share with you guys some of the sketches I've done for my project.

Sketching is an amazing tool to be able to communicate your design ideas to a client. I also find it really helpful in the design process to get a better idea of what a space plan will look like in 3-D... especially when I want some interesting architectural details goin' on like I do in this project. If you follow me on Instagram or Facebook, you've probably already seen these, but I thought I'd share in blogland as well. Hope you enjoy!

I'm going for a traditional look that incorporates articulated architectural detailing, classic finishes

We're supposed to have one inspiration photo for our process board which will be due in the next couple weeks. I'm not sure how I'll narrow it down, but I though I'd share with you guys my inspiration. And feel free to check out more on my Pinterest board.
Today I'll tell you/show you how I put together what I call my "Draft" Portfolio. If you're looking for a job in the interior design industry, a portfolio is something you will absolutely need. But what do you do if you haven't finished school and don't have any "real" projects to include? At my school we have a class as part of the Bachelor's program where they teach how to put a portfolio together and help you refine yours. But that class is at the end of the program, so what about us folks who aren't that far along in school and want design jobs? What do we do? Here's what I did...

As always, Google is your friend. I did some internet research on "interior design portfolio" and also thumbed through a book on the same subject in my school's library. From what I could tell, it looked as though students basically "deconstructed" their digital design board and reformatted each project to a more manageable size, like 11"x17" (or a spread of 2 11"x17" sheets), to be added to a portfolio book. Another common thing I noticed was a consistent graphic design across all pages to pull the projects into a cohesive book... basically like a letterhead with some type of header/footer.

So I followed their lead and deconstructed my own digital design boards and reassembled them in 11x17 format. I made sure to include sketches, floor plans, fabirc and major furnishing choices to give the overall idea of each project. While I did this for all of my digital boards, I didn't have the time to do this for my first board which wasn't digital since it would have required finding all the images angain. Instead, I just included photographs of the boards. I also made a point of including some sketches, CAD drawings, etc. to show a variety of skills as well as the process of my designs. I did also utilize the idea of a consistent header/footer graphic and created a simple stripe at the bottom and top of each page along with the double arrow (from the blog) next to each heading.

I created the whole thing in Adobe InDesign had it printed on 11x17 paper. I used brads to hold it together so that I could switch around the order or add/remove pages depending on which employer I was showing it to.

It still could use a lot of editing and refining, and will eventually have quite a few more projects in it... heck, I may even change it all together when I'm in the Senior Show class! But for now, it works.
I really love it! I'll get back to "Taking the Plunge" next time with a little info on how I put together my portfolio, but for now, I thought I'd give you a little update of whats up design-wise in my life right now since I've gotten a bit behind.

This quarter I'm taking Residential Design and Business Principles. So I'll be designing a New York apartment for charismatic music mogul and business owner Harry Sanborne (Jack Nicolson's character from Something's Gotta Give), his food critic wife Karen (from the play Dinner with Friends), and Taylor Swift. Just turned in my client profiles, design concept and design program last week and am looking forward to designing a comfortable traditional home to add something a bit different to my portfolio.

In the mean time, at Dwellings Design Group, we've been working on a modern remodel overlooking the back bay.

A bathroom and kitchen remodel, as well as redecorating a home with a pottery barn look.

And some other little jobs here and there. So I've got quite the variety of design in my life right now. And I love it!

Sorry I've been off the map for a little while. I hope everyone had a fun Labor Day weekend. I know I did! I have since been working out of a hotel room while my apartment is fumigated for termites. Fun fun! Anyway... lets get onto round two of "Taking the Plunge."

If you're interested in taking the plunge into another career, one of the first things you probably need to update your resume. Today I'll share with you how I updated my resume to transition from Civil Engineering to Interior Design. Of course you'll have different experience and objectives, but I figured it might help someone out there to break down what I went into my design resume and what I changed.

I'll tell you more about my branding in another post, but I basically wanted to create an image for myself and make my resume look good. I used the same text and arrows that I used for my blog.

I added an objective that I tailored for the various jobs I was investigating. In this one, I specifically noted that I want to work at a "high-end residential firm." For another resume geared toward retail, I emphasized customer service. This is a simple change to make that can really make your resume and you fit for the position you're looking for. You can even use words from the job description!

I put my education and design skills at the top. Because I didn't have any design job experience, my design education is the most relevant information for the positions I'm interested in. I also chose to give descriptions of my school design projects. If you have relevant design experience you could choose to make two different job sections for "Relevant Experience" and "Other Experience" or something along those lines. Basically, the idea is to get the stuff that relates to the job you're looking for at the top.

One mistake I did make was not putting my expected graduation date. I left it off because I wasn't sure if I was going to continue onto the bachelor program or stop at after I get my associates degree. But most people asked me when I was going to be finished with school, so I just gave them an answer based on finishing the bachelors anyway. So I should have just put that on there and recommend for your to do so even if you're unsure. Just pick the date you think is most likely.

Throughout my resume I made the important information, like desirable computer skills and awards, stand out with bold text. That way at a glance someone should be able to see the stuff that is important to the job and the stuff that makes you stand out as a candidate.

Add any memberships you have with professional organizations in your industry. It looks good to be involved.

In the last section of my experience I modified my job descriptions quite a bit to make them more general. Interior designers don't typically know what H2OMap or InfoSWMM are, so instead of listing specific computer programs I used in my engineering job, I more generally wrote "hydraulic models." I also added key words like "problem solving skills" to express the transferable skills that I have gained from my experience.

Finally, I added a little pizazz to my resume by adding a border and making some text the same color. As far as I know, this isn't something that's done for an Engineering job and probably many others. But since design is largely about aesthetics, you better have a good lookin' resume if you want it to be your profession.

Hope that helps someone out there!
I've been meaning to write about this for a little while now, so I was happy to be reminded. This "Taking the Plunge" series of posts will share details of how I worked my way into the field of design. I still have quite a ways to go, but I figure, why not share it with ya'll while it's current and fresh on my mind. Hopefully this can be a helpful to anyone else looking to change careers to pursue a passion. It is by no means the only way to go about transitioning; this is simply my experience.

As most of you probably know (if you've read the About Me section), I started out by searching out and enrolling in interior design school. I felt that for me to be confident in my future career, I needed the education to back it up. I looked at a few different schools that were CIDA accredited--that's the Council for Interior Design Accreditation. I wanted to go somewhere that had a reputable program. Finally, I decided on Interior Designers Institute because it was accredited, close to my house, and slightly less expensive than others I looked into.

I went into school excited and interested. I've been quite successful in it thus far, so I thought I'd share with you a few ideas that I developed from the beginning, which I believe have helped me.

Don't worry about grades. I'm not in school to get a good report card like I was in elementary school. I enrolled in design school to learn information and how to apply it and to exercise and hone my design skills. The learning is the important part to me, not the paper transcript. So I don't think about my grades. And what'dya know... the grades that have followed as a result of that attitude couldn't be better.

Treat each teacher as your client. We usually have to make up a fictional clients for school projects, but I always think of my teacher as the client since they are evaluating the work. If they have input, I take it; if they don't like something, I change it. I do my best not to take things personally and figure it's good practice for dealing with clients in the future. I also keep in mind that there are so many different ways to design something well, so I need to be flexible and not get stuck on doing something one way.

Learn from your peers. I always look around at other student's work. There are many talented people at school, so I try gather as much inspiration as possible. I love seeing the way that different people approach projects and their unique visions. It helps me expand my ideas about design and look at projects in different ways, which might help me to think of better design solutions.

Be the best you can be; don't try to be THE best. Some people might disagree with me here, but for me, trying to have a little humility goes a long way. I must admit, I'm human and pride does get me at times, but I do my best to stifle it. Design is such a subjective matter; there really is no "best." I try not to think of school as a competition and instead remind myself of #3... instead of being stuck on trying to be the most awesome, I remind myself that others have awesome ideas as well. I appreciate the work of my peers, let myself be inspired by them, and do the best that I can on each individual project with the "client" in mind.

Be of service. I think helping my peers feeds the soul. Like I said... it's not a competition. I don't hesitate to share ideas, information and assistance whenever possible.

Armed with these objectives, I think you're bound to maximize your success. Now, go get 'em design students!

Coming up in the series, I'll share about...

how to revamp your resume for design,

putting together a portfolio (quickly), and

searching and interviewing for jobs.

Sorry for my absence. Don't really have an excuse, but here I am getting back into it (blogging I mean). Isn't life just like that sometimes? Sometimes you're on fire, other times you're not. So it goes.

Anyway, I've been telling myself to get back up to speed on blogging, so a month ago... hahaha... yes, a month ago... I went to Joann's to try to find some fabric for a little project I wanted to do and share on the blog. And to my surprise, the location was closing! Everything was 75% off, but they were only selling fabric by the bolts and I didn't want to purchase that much. So I didn't end up getting anything for that project, BUT I found something else exciting...

A plethora of pretty trim. I picked up a bunch that works with my mom's living room fabric, which we plan on using to make pillows. You may remember, I shared our plan for the room here. Well, I've updated the design board...

The scheme is the same, but after all the searching for the right chaise fabric, we still are leaning toward a small blue and white stripe. My mom wants something a little more formal than a typical ticking stripe, perhaps with a sheen to it, so we're still on the hunt. And I'm still scouring craigslist for peach/pink chairs. I found this one, which certainly works, color-wise, but it isn't quite as saturated as we would like. If it had been comfortable, I definitely would have grabbed it, but alas... it was not. :(

Although I'm not sure if I'm up for reupholstering a chair myself, I looked through some peachy-pink fabric at work the other day...

Aren't they lovely!

Next up we'll start discussing a new fire place mantel, which I think will really have an impact on the space. Can't wait to share more as we go along!

1. What annoys you more than anything?

When someone talks about/makes fun of other people in their absence. Most people have their moments where they gossip or voice their opinion of someone here and there, which can be annoying, but I understand and know that I do the same at times. But what bothers me is when someone does it all the time. Or when an entire conversation in a group turns to ridiculing someone who's not there. I find it particularly irritating if its about someone they don't really know. I can't stand it!

2. How do you stay creative?

I'd say mostly by looking stuff up online... especially Pinterest! When I'm working on a specific project I often gather ideas for layouts by looking at similar spaces online. When it comes to color and materials, I think I'm inspired by everything around me... colors in artwork, patterns of pretty fabric, textures in nature, you name it! I also think we're subliminally heavily influenced by trends; I think we start seeing something well done in a lot of spaces and fall in love the look even if we're not quite sure where exactly we got the idea.

3. What is your favorite movie?
That's a tough one because I really enjoy all movie genres and there are so many good ones! But... Amelie is definitely a top choice, was obsessed with Now and Then growing up, and love anything with Audrey Hepburn. On the less girly side, Pulp Fiction and Fight Club never get old for me, and I love a movie with a good twist like Momento or The Machinist.

I'm studying what I'd love to study right now! And I'd do the same if someone gave me free tuition. Read my About Me page for more info. Sometimes I wish I would have done interior design the first time since my parents paid for my tuition then (this time I'm on my own), but the reality is that I didn't know what I wanted to do back then and even if I did, I wouldn't have appreciated it the way I do now.

It's a symbol my dad made up when he and my mother were dating: two interlocked hearts. They'd write it on love letters to each other and my dad even had a ring made for my mom a while back. Although they're no longer together, they've remained good friends, and my sister and I got the tattoos as a symbol of our family since it was their love that made us! My dad later got the same tattoo. Still working on convincing mom to get one.
3. I used to arrange my barbies into little settings when I was a kid and got angry when my little sister moved them to play with them. I was kind of a brat.
4. I enjoy many music genres the same way I love many different design styles. You might find me listening to country music one morning, gettin' down to Robin Thicke on the drive home, singing along to Otis Redding, or relaxing to Pandora's "The Girl From Ipanema" Radio station while cooking.
5. I love black jelly beans, but not black licorice. Something about the after taste.
6. I visit the Goodwill or Salvation Army at least twice a month to scour for treasures.
7. I talk out loud to Duchess (my kitty) all the time. Sometimes I think she understands me! ;)
When I was a kid I told my dad I was never going to shave my legs. That obviously didn't last, but I'm still a hippie au naturel girl at heart!
9. Breakfast is my favorite meal of the day. Why are eggs a breakfast food and not an any meal food?, that's what I want to know!
10. I was extremely shy growing up. I'm really grateful that for the most part that has changed, but I still struggle with speaking up and being myself at times. I constantly try to remind myself that I can't control what others think of me and instead direct my attention to being helpful and doing my best. That always helps!
11. I dance and hop around my house nearly every day.
I got a design job! This week I started working part time as a design assistant, which I plan to tell you more about when I have the time. Right now it feels like I don't have time for much, but I'm sure it will be easier to manage things once I've been doing it for a little while.

I also had a really busy weekend. Here are some clips. (If you follow me on Instagram you've already seen most of this)

Went to a fun rockabilly show called Rumble on Pine in Long Beach. Sat on hey, saw a friends 2 bands play, looked at cool old cars, and tried on hats!

Then I went up to my mom's and hung out with the kitties and their furry feet. Next day, saw a friend's new house and the Jonathan Alder salt&pepper shakers that I got for their wedding in their new home. Went to breakfast with her and other friends and caught up. Then mom and I went to the LA Gift show and I tried on more hats... its one of my favorite past times. Fun fun!

And now the new job. Busy busy busy! But I hope to be back on a regular blogging schedule soon. Hope I don't loose you guys!
Today I'm going to share with you the mini makeover I gave my
"patio" last weekend. Its really just the landing at the top of my
stairs, but since I don't actually have a patio or porch or anything of
the sort, this tiny space is my apartment version of a patio.

You'd think I would have done it before the 4th right? But no, I'm a procrastinator and did it after. I did do a bunch of thinking about it before though! That counts for something right?! Haha. Jk.

But for realz... if you follow me on Instagram or Facebook, you might have guessed that I've been looking for a job which has been a lot of work.

Yup, that's me! All ready for an interview. I'll tell you guys more about all that soon. But for now, lets get back to the patio makeover...

Who kills every flower they put on their patio? That would be me. I'm great at keeping my indoor plants alive, but I tend to neglect the patio plants and they just don't do well without a lot of water. So here is what my patio looked like before the make over...
So sad! Aside from dead plants, I also wanted to give that thrift store chair a fresh fabric and my welcome mat needed a good shake since my kitty sheds all over it. (I'm blaming that one on her! Haha) And just ignore the broken screen... that's my ghetto-chic kitty door! The overhang is also a big disaster. One day the management started scraping the over hang, presumingly to paint it, only to reveal major termite damage, at which point they stopped and left it that way. That was months ago. And lets just not talk about the giant crack in the landing. Thanks management guys! But that stuff is not my responsibility, so lets get down to the stuff that is...

The first step was to plant some new plants. I had a snake plant indoors that I wanted to move to that pot and thought it would be perfect to surround it with some fun, hopefully easy to keep alive, succulents. I stopped by The Plant Stand in Costa Mesa, which has a really nice selection and learned that they were having a succulent "class" the following day at which they were giving out 50% off coupons for succulents. Count me in!
I went back the next day to collect the goods and my awesome boyfriend offered to keep me company. I thought he'd be helpful in the decision making process because he usually just picks one thing or the other, but instead he got super into the succulent hunt! He kept finding new succulents he liked. It was so cute! Now maybe he knows why I always have a hard time making decision like that. They're all so great! But we finally did come to a decision and picked out a nice variety of scale and colors. And the result...
Next, I recovered the chair with a fabric remnant that I got from school. I actually kind of like the existing equestrian print fabric, but I thought something a little more modern and colorful would give it a little excitement. I went to Joann's to find something but discovered that they are closing the location by my house and only selling fabric by the entire bolt. Not wanting to purchase 6 yards of fabric for which I have no use, I decided to stick with the remnant.
There I am screwing the seat back on... so exciting! Even though it wasn't my first choice of fabric, when it was all said and done, I think it turned out great! And especially appropriate for the Fourth of July (even though I finished it on the 6th). I thought about repainting the metal, but I decided to leave that to another day. Check out the before and after...
Much better right? Now all I have to do is keep my little succulents alive. Wish me luck!
